Arnold Schönberg was a groundbreaking composer of the 20th century known for his departure from traditional tonality. His innovative contributions include the development of atonal music and the twelve-tone technique, which redefined how pitch was organized in compositions. Schönberg's influence extends beyond his compositions to his role as a mentor, shaping the trajectory of modern and contemporary classical music.
In this programme, we aim to show through transcriptions that, despite his later departure from Romanticism, the early compositions serve as a foundation, illustrating Schoenberg's initial engagement with the expressive and harmonic language of late German Romanticism before he entered the realm of modernist innovation.
